Hey, yall. Been kind of quite around here lately, I know. I think it was a bad case of the winter blahs. I wasn’t feeling the weather. I wasn’t feeling the job. I wasn’t feeling the gym. The only thing I was feeling was the couch. Bad TV, bad food, and one badass cat piled up right next to me.

I’m think I’m coming out of it though. I’m hopeful that tomorrow I’ll throw on something decent. I’m hopeful that I won’t spend the work day wanting to scream. I’m hopeful that I’ll drag my rump to the gym and get some endorphins pumping.

Mostly I’m hopeful that I’ll feel like me again.

Worst Seat in the House

My dentist has this amazing head set for watching movies during procedures. It kind of reminded me of an old school Viewmaster. In theory it was really handy. One could take their mind off of the horror in their mouth by watching a favorite flick. It didn't work out so well for me since I'm blind as a bat without my glasses and it didn't accommodate the specs. However, if I squinted just right I could just make out Chris Evans (as the Human Torch) in all his shirtless glory.

This was pre-torture... I mean dentist appointment.

I could see where someone may consider the navy/red combo boring. I like to think classic. I also like to think I made a good choice in wearing the only clean pair of pants I had.

I can't be the only person in the world that gets super stoked to get good mail. I mean pretty much anything other than bills or junk mail. Saturday was an awesome mail day. Along with my 20$ Pier One rewards certificate (love Pier One so very much) my new battery charger for my camera came in. Yep, some fool (that's me raising my hand sheepishly) managed to lose her charger. The worst part about it was that I wore some pretty cute outfits last week and couldn't managed to get a decent shot with the husband's camera. I am 100% spoiled to my big beast of a camera.

But I'm back in business today

I love getting compliments on this necklace. Makes me feel all warm inside saying "thank you, my mother made it."

There Aren’t Enough Fridays in the Week.

I'm kind of a gym rat during the week. I love hitting the gym after work and getting rid of all the stress the day piles on. However, when Friday rolls around all I want to do is head to the house, crack open an adult beverage, and spend some time with my boy.

Part II

I’m a full on movie junkie. I could spend all day at the movie theater and have been known to forego all parties and happenings for weekends with my DVD player. I love suspending disbelief, simply giving into the idea that crazy creatures or serendipitous events could really be/happen. I love happy endings. I love characters that are so well written/played that you want them to move in next door to you and be best friends. There is, however, one thing I hate. Sequels for the sake of a sequel. Bad movies happen. You can’t expect everyone to be genius. On the other hand once you make a bad movie you don’t have to do a part two just a turn a buck. (Nic Cage, was this really necessary? I know you’re broke, but come on.)

But I am all for outfit sequels. Good or bad.

I’m calling this Black and Tan 2, the Return. The winterized version for one of our rare cold days. Like most good sequels there’s some new cast members, my new red shoes and some tights. And like most bad sequels some good characters from the original didn’t make it, in other words I’m really not sure where the hell my belt is.

Ya’ll I know there’s a good chance I can get excommunicated from my state for this but I am so freaking tired of LSU football. The Red Shoe Diaries

The red shoe has split personalities. On one hand it was the mascot of that risqué late night romp that more than one teen found oh so educational. On the other hand it was the red shoe that got Dorothy home. So it stands to reason a girl can exercise her naughty and her nice side with just a pair of red shoes.

Today was another Pintrest inspired day. I found this awesome outfit which came from Rachael, Really. (I couldn’t find the actual shot but I figured I would link back anyway.) I loved the idea of doing more with a cowl neck sweater than just letting the shape stand out.

I love it when I find things I can recreate easily but with my own (slightly different) pieces.

I actually like my jacket a bit more than the striped blazer in the set. I’m not so much into the horizontal stripes.

I also feel I made a big leap today in blogging courageousness. I had to snap my pic at the end of the day in my home away from home. I waited till the end of the day in hopes I’d be all by my lonesome. Didn’t quite work out for me. So I got all gutsy and explained to my co-worker that’d I’d be out in our common area snapping pictures of myself. I explained about the bolg and she actually seemed intrigued by the whole thing. Yay for gutsy me!

History

Quick history lesson: Natchitoches LA is the oldest permanent settlement in the Louisiana Purchase. When I was going to school there I had a couple of buddies with a radio show. They liked to refer to Natchitoches as the oldest settlement with the least amount of progress. And even now it seems progress hasn't really sank its high tech claws into Natchitoches. It's still got amazing cobble streets and a ton of cute, non-chain shops. One of my favorite shops is essentially a two story flea market. The boy and I always spend about an hour wondering around. We never have anything in mind to buy but something always jumps out.

This time it was a new addition to my growing scarf collection.

I love how the scarf lends a pretty splash of color to a super simple outfit. (The picture colors are a little off but I'm sure ya'll get the idea.) The stripes are soft teal, pink, and brown. With brown slacks and a gray sweater (love combining gray and brown) it was a nice work day throw together.

New Toys

Normally when a person is lurking around the park with a camera a speed dial call to the cops is in order. I’ve seen enough SVU to know that people hanging around parks with cameras are up to no good. Except when it’s me.

This was my first go with the new tripod. I love it to pieces. It made getting my pics at least 82% less of a hassle. The park is just a few minutes from my office and it was the first place I could think of that would give me a good background for my pics.

Trying to find good spots for pics is kind of difficult. I see great places but then I start to consider how akward it’ll be to have people gawking at me what I set up the tripod and snap away. Anybody have any tips on how to dodge on lookers? Or I suppose I can just pretend that being gawked at like I have something growing out of my forehead doesn’t bother me.

As for the outfit, an article I read in Real Simple came to mind after I pulled it on that morning. It said that wearing less pastels was one way to update your wardrobe. I think I have to disagree. I don’t think that particular colors can date you. Well, maybe if you’re sporting a pastel pants suit.

The Near Past

Most people were bundled up in warm tights and cozy sweaters when I took this picture.

This was mid-November. Or maybe late November. While most parts of the country transition from summer, to fall, and on to winter my dear home flops around like an out of water fish. You may wake up in the morning to frosty early 50’s and find yourself sweating in the 70’s by noon. The chilly weather doesn’t really set in to stay until the end of December or so. And while I don’t mind the warm weather I was pretty excited about unpacking the winter clothes for good.

It’s a whole new year, ya’ll! I hope everyone got their celebration on. I know I did. I had a whole next day on the couch lot of celebration. But it was so worth it.

I’m not so much into resolutions but I do always feel reenergized at the beginning of the year. I feel motivated. I have a laundry list of things I want to get done. Putting more energy into this little blog is right up at the top of that list. My sweet boy got me a brand new shiny tripod for Christmas! I can’t wait to find great places for photos. And I racked up at some holiday season sales so I can’t wait to put together new, fun outfits. And I can’t wait to see all the awesome inspiration my fav bloggers bring in the new year.

Hey ya’ll! Dipped off for another little minute there, sorry about that. The boy and I ran off to Vegas for a week. We’d been trying to do it forever but that pesky Army kept getting in the way. Finally we got it all squared away, hopped in the car, and set off on our epic adventure. Yep, we took a two day drive to Vegas and yep, we’re still happily married. Can I just say for the record I really really like my husband? Just want to get it out there. He’s been bopping around the house for the past couple of weeks (do that war thing for a year and they give you a month off. Ah, Army generosity) and I’m amazed by the things he’s gotten done. My boy has gotten all crafty on me… wait, can boys be crafty? Is there a manly equivalent of crafty? Anyway, he’s put up the shed that’s been leaning in pieces against the house for two years, built me a little sock drawer, and he built me a clothes line.

So happy with my clothes line. However, I’m thinking it needs a couple of yard gnomes on either end.

Some mornings things go beautifully and I pull on the outfit I laid out the night before with no problem. Other mornings I am the equivalent of hurricane hitting my bedroom. The cat takes cover, the kind of language that would make mama pop me in the mouth fills the air, and on the drive to work I find myself very glad my car can double as a racecar and get me there with two minutes to spare. Today was that other morning.

How Much Would the Repair Guy Charge?

I’m not a big fan of the winter season. I love love love eating holiday meals (honestly, I just love eating in general) and I love the contrast between crisp, cold outside and a cozy warm home. I also love breaking out the tights and sweaters for a seemingly new wardrobe. However, I hate being cold. And I pretty much stay that way after the temps drop below 67. My inner thermostat is broken. I simply cannot stay warm. Today is a prime example. The day started off in the 50s so I put some nice warm tights on under my skirt.

It ended up in the 70s (thanks bipolar Louisiana weather) and while a normal person would have been sweltering, I was still pretty comfortable. It’s gonna be a long winter.

Pleasing To The Palate

There aren’t many foods I won’t try. If you ask my Daddy he’ll tell you I’ll eat anything that won’t eat me first. I can’t really say he’s wrong. It’s pretty hard to think of anything I flat out wouldn’t eat, would never try….maybe mountain oysters, that’s kind of weird.

I’m less adventurous with makeup. I’m always kind of worried I’ll look silly. But thanks to some encouragement from the awesome Ms. Sarah (Desterhan’s Daughter), I decided to throw some bright pink lipstick in the mix.

I kind of loved it! It made me feel so bright and cheerful. I snagged a cheapy tube just to see if I liked wearing it in general and the color is just a smidge too cool for my skin tone. Now that I know I’m comfortable wearing it, I think I’ll upgrade and find the perfect pink for me (suggestions welcome!).

We have new customer chairs in our office. When boss asked me what color I wanted I thought he was suggesting I make him dinner; all the names seemed food related. After we established I was picking colors, not ingredients, I picked Paprika. The chairs aren't terribly comfy but my co-worker pointed out that they do go pretty well with today's outfit.

I have a habit of shopping on-line, filling up my virtual cart, and then xing out of the window. Sometimes the shopping is almost as satisfying as actually having the clothes. No, that’s a lie, having the clothes would be far, far more satisfying.

I’m in a rut, ya’ll. I look in my closet and just think “Uhg”. I feel like I’ve worn everything a million times and there’s just nothing new I can do with them. Or else the pieces just don’t fit and I really need to get rid of them.

I’ve been trying to do something with myself this week. I mean I can’t go to work naked, obviously.

This was Tuesday. Lesson learn here: never put these two pieces together EVER AGAIN. My Lord, I look like a line backer!

Wednesday I opted for this skirt that I hadn't worn in ages. And I ended up wearing it with the same shirt I wore last time. Oops.

The only bad thing about it is that it's far too big for me now. I had to fold it over and cinch it with my belt. It didn't look so bad but it was a big fat pain in the ass. One more for the off to the tailor pile.

I felt very bloggerish today. I layered a shirt over my dress and I did a little pattern mixing.

This may actually be the most bloggery I've ever been. Very monumental day for me.

It was a pretty monumental weekend too. Seeing live music is one of my most favorite things in the whole wide world. In my opinion it's hard to have bad live music. There's energy from the performers, there's energy from the crowd, and if you're lucky you get to see a good show.

Saturday night one of my fav girlies and I shot down to Baton Rouge to catch Framing Hanley. While they put on a decent show, it was the opening act that completely blew my mind. The band is Oh No Fiasco (post title is from one of their songs). Their lead has the most amazing set of pipes. She sounded even better in person. And the band had this insane energy. I've had their disc since Saturday night and already know most of the lyrics. I can't stop listening. They're that awesome. I def suggest you check them out!

Being on my own so much is starting to cause some serious behavior regression. I realized this the other night when I found myself eating leftover frosting while watching ICarly. Just me, a tub of cream cheese frosting, and some tween entertainment. It's pretty sad that I can't be trusted to act like an adult without my husband here to keep me in line.

But on the bright side I did steal a little fashion inspiration from the show. Those kids are all about layering. Helped me figure out another way to wear this dress without cardigan usage.

I celebrated my birthday by taking my nephews on a road trip to Destin this past weekend. Yep, my idea of a fun celebration is driving two preteen boys eight hours (eight there and eight back) to the beach and trying to keep up with them all weekend. Obviously I'm a glutton for punishment. Really though, it was a great time. We hit the beach, we hit the pool, and we got plenty of sun. Well, I got plenty of sun. And somehow a sunburn on the tops of my feet. Only on the tops of my feet. Awesome.

Most days, work sucks. But I think it’s the American way to work a job that sucks for less money than you deserve. Today was that day. All the soldiers we helped were in good moods and the computers were minimally cranky. That’s a dang good day.

Sweet Tooth

I spent about 20 mins in the candy isle at Walgreens yesterday. I knew I wanted some sweets but I just couldn't decide what I wanted. While debating I also argued with my brother about the merits of gummy/chewy candy (I'm pro chewy Gobstoppers and Runts, he is not) and listened to him call our sister and threaten to send her some chocolate covered licorice (ick). I think maybe we have too much time on our hands.

This outfit kind of reminds me of my Runts box (which is what I ended up with) but more so of this palette. This also makes the 6th time I've posted this cardigan. So worth every one of those 10 dollars.

I have this horrible habit of only ironing things when their absolutely terrible. In fact I wear some things the I really should have ironed first. But I'm trying to do better! In fact I just couldn't walk out of the house in the dress I planned to wear this morning. I put it on and everything. I was hoping that putting it on would make it seem less wrinkled. Didn't quite work. So I just went with the 1950's housewife look (although I'm pretty sure any good old school house wife would have gotten her ironing done. Sigh).

The Rock Show

I was a little too young to really bask in the angsty grunge music of the early 90s. There was no slipping out to Nirvana concerts for me. By the time I hit my teens the rock music scene had transformed to something a little angrier with bands like Slipknot and Korn. Of course I grooved on those guys too but it just couldn’t compare to Kurt Cobain’s wail or Eddie Vedder’s babble. And I still haven’t let go of my grunge music yet. Or the plaid.

Ya'll, I've got a rant building... if you're not inclined to read once again please feel free to vamoose to the cute kittens.

Begin rant: I understand that the internet is the place where plenty of people let out their nasty. Essentially the old saying has warped into if you don't have anything nice to say.... say it online. I've come to terms with that. Folks are going to be nasty and overly opinionated. Fine. That's just how life is. However, as the loving old lady of a big strong Army man it really pisses me off when a fellow spouse tries to insinuate that their political beliefs are more important or not refutable simply because of what their husband/wife does for a living. An opinion is still just an opinion no matter who/what your significant other is. I see these kinds of shenanigans in far too many comment sections and it just adds to the military spouse stereotype. Grrr.

Keep The Streets Empty for Me

I'm an aggressive driver. Or if you listen to my husband, I drive like a maniac. I tend to get edgy when people brake for no reason and I 100% lose my mind when people loiter in the passing lane. You pass and you get over; it's not rocket science. Obviously driving can amp me up a bit, which is one of the reasons I love summer. Less traffic. I can get all the way to work without wishing a plague on incompetent drivers (who are undoubtedly wishing death on the crazy person, me, who just whipped around them). Just a great summer perk. Just like my propensity for soft, light colors.

I cringe at the thought of wearing black right now. I know I could get away with it sitting in my ice box of an office but walking from the office to the car or waiting for the car to cool off on the drive home would be murder.

I liked my pretty blues today but I was a little sad the outfit didn't show off my cute new belt. It's the Baby Blue twin to green one in this post (which I also got. Yay!). So I thought I'd just show it off to you guys

Sometimes I think all the bad days are completely worth it just to make you appreciate the good days when they come along. Today has been a red letter day for me. I got to chat with my boy for a while this morning and I found out the part I'll need to fix the AC in my car is only going to cost one arm and one leg instead of both arms and legs (and for the time being I now know the exact place I need to smack the dashboard to get it to work). Yep I'm a pretty happy girl. Really digging my outfit today just adds to it.

I got this shirt from Tulle but it's been living in the closet because it had to be tailored. In a lot of cases I have to buy a medium to get the length I need but then the piece is pretty huge on me. I sing the praises of my tailor!

Ick, Thursday's outfit didn't not turn out the way I wanted it to.

I liked the idea of brightening up orange and black with sunny yellow and making it less Halloweeny, but the proportions on this on just didn't work. Black is supposed to be slimming but I just look blobish on bottom.

Luckily, Friday was better

So, here's a kind of touchy subject: business casual. Today a lady that works in a different department came in to check distro. She was wearing a pink tennis style dress (of appropriate length), white leggings, and white platform flip flops. Her was in a messy bun and she had her shades on top of her head. Appropriate/cute on the weekend? Sure! For work... in a government building, on a Wednesday? Not so much. What do you guys think? What falls under the scope of "business casual"? I'm not curious about your job's dress code, I curious what you think is appropriate.

As for me, what does or doesn't fall into the category is kind of like that obscenity ruling, I know it when I see. My outfit today is a pretty good example

Except for that pesky wrinkling. I did not start the day like that. I'm a compulsive leg tucker though and my clothes pay the price.

I really don't like most clocks. That loud buzzing or beeping always leads to me waking up in a foul mood. I like to used my phone for an alarm. Only problem with my phone is that there's no one button snooze. You have to reset the whole alarm. Makes the transition from sleeping to awake to stealing that last 20 mins sorta difficult. Ran So Far Away

I’m both dreading and looking forward to my run today. I did little to nothing the whole time the boy was home (unless you count trekking around Sea World sweating buckets, which I don’t. And, yuck, excuse the visual). Yesterday I hopped on the treadmill at the gym and it was grueling. Running around the neighborhood this evening (have to wait until it cools down a bit) might kill me.

Hopefully I’ll live ‘cause I really don’t want this to be my last outfit ever

Not that there’s really anything wrong with this one. It’s just that it was born out of necessity instead of creativity. It was a last min replacement. My beloved red dress no longer fits. It’s all huge and sack like now. And I found that out this morning as I pulled it on, planning to wear it to work. Uhg. Hopefully ya'll didn't give up on me! I swear I really thought about doing some posts during vacation. There was plenty of stuff I wanted to post but I couldn't drag myself away from my boy for the 15 mins it would have taken to get it done. Two weeks is just not enough. But on the bright side we've only about three more months of this deployment left and he's mine again.

Today I dove back into the routine. Work, work-out, and the best part... blogging.

I picked up this new top while getting some retail therapy after dropping the boy at the airport. I've been dying for some cool sleeveless tops since it's about 400 degrees here.

Here we go again, taking those crazy chances... my blues totally don't match

Navy and teal? Oh my word! Yep taking risks and breaking rules, that's just what I do. In fact I just got back from stealing lunch money from the little neighbor kids. No, I didn't. That's a total lie. And that's a really mean thing to do. Don't steal from little kids, ok ya'll? Really though I just thought it would be fun to mix in a little extra color. And it paid off, I got a compliment on my outfit... not "hey, I like that necklace" or "those shoes are pretty groovy", nope she said "hey, Nikkole, I like that outfit". That's a red letter compliment to me. Sure, the others (compliments) are nice but complimenting the outfit on the whole seems more like a compliment on the way you pulled it together. Ya'll I think the TV is really starting to rot my mind. Its these shows on TLC like Hoarders and Extreme Couponing. Extreme Couponing is the new addiction (saving Hoarders for when the boy gets back. He has to be there to answer the important questions like, "Was that a freakin' possum?!?!") It's like a train wreck, I can't look away. I'm snuggled up in bed with a nice glass of wine watching people use 300 coupons. And the logical part of my brain is like wow, that's got to be indicative of some mental issue. The not so logical part of my brain is saying oh my God, if I could get groceries for free imagine all the shoes I could buy! Anybody else watching this craziness?

And here's some not so craziness in today's outfit (except maybe the hair. Uhg.)

Time to give myself a stern talking to: Girly, you have got to get it together. You need to put some thought into what you walking out the house looking like (and blog about it, of course), you need to get your eating and exercising back in order, and you need to keep your head together. It just won’t do to let everything go to pieces just ‘cause that boy is coming back around! Ha! Who am I kidding? If you know a girl who doesn’t lose her mind just a little when she’s finally reunited with her man after six and a half very long months then she’s a whole lot more woman than I am!

But I’m hoping that trying to make myself stick to my normal schedule will help me get through this last little week. So I started it off by pulling this together last night

I usually stick with one focal point. A fun shoe, a pretty pattern, or some interesting bling. At first I was going to throw on a solid brown pump with this outfit. Then I thought why not do fun jewelry and shoes? I mean you only live once. I should have some fun and takes some risks. Even if my outfit risks are as about it risky as a paper cut.

And how about that very bloggery top knot?

Yeah, at around 3:30 I simply could not deal with my hair any longer. It was either knot it up or grab the scissors out of the desk drawer.

I threaten to go Office Space (if you’ve never see the movie you should totally check it out. So funny) on our copy machine at least three times a week. It beeps every single time you do anything with it. Push any button, it beeps. Put a piece of paper in the feeder, it beeps. It starts copying, it beeps and it finishes with a beep. Uhg. No office machine should make that much noise. In fact I think office phone ringers should be replaced by a calming voice saying “you have a phone call, please pick up the phone” or something to that affect.

There are three things in this world that scare the crap out of me. Needles (no good ever comes with those), roaches (nothing that ugly should be able to fly. It just ain't right) and clowns. That's the top three in exact order. So seeing as how I kind of have track marks right now you can assume it's been a rough day. I had to have some labs done at the hospital. There I was all whimpering like a little baby, telling myself its almost over, its almost over when the nurse tells me "I'm sorry but I'm not getting any blood from this arm". This morning at my house: accidently closed the cat in the closet door after I grabbed my cardi and then spent the next five minutes following the cat around the house to apologize with pets. Sticking with the soft spring colors I’m putting this dress into rotation for another year.

Like most people with fashion affliction I love fashion magazines. I can pass an entire evening just flipping through looking at pictorials and reading about the latest trends. However, most of the styles are a little too edgy for the small town I live in. I’ve got to get this off my chest. I’m getting really tired of celebrities jumping on the “curvy girl” bandwagon. I was reading the new issue of Lucky and the piece on Ginnifer Goodwin really rubbed me the wrong way. In the article she commented that she has to have most of her pieces tailored because she’s two different sizes. Pretty common aliment for most of us right? But I found myself thinking, “yeah, you’re likely a size two and a size zero” which, of course, is not such a common aliment.

I find this whole “we celebrities are just like you… we have to dress our curves” mantra to be pretty tired (expect in cases of ladies like Jennifer Lopez… her, I feel). I feel it’s dishonest. They don’t have bodies like typical women. Their job is to look good on screen. It’s what they get paid to do and that’s just fine. I’d like to hear them being real about it. I’d much rather hear this from a starlet “my trainer works me so hard, I’m so tiny I barely fit into clothes meant for women! It’s a struggle to shop anywhere but the junior section.” Would that make a lot of women envious? Sure. But I would really appreciate the honesty. However, I doubt any kind of change is on the horizon. Sigh.

Growing up in a family that is old school southern, I learned a few things. For instance the first thing you're supposed to do when a visitor comes in the house is get them something to drink or eat. This usually comes out as "ya'll want something to drink?" Also, no matter where you may be going you're always going "up there". For example when asking if you'll be heading to see your parents who live fifteen miles south of you, you may be asked "you coming up to mama's?" I have no problem adhering to these rules. However, today, I'm breaking one of the rules I was taught as a little girl... don't mix brown and black

While I think I can skip rehab I do have to tighten the reigns. Stuff Mama Left Behind

I have a thing for boxes. I’ve never been able to put my finger on why but I love decorative boxes, jewelry boxes, letter boxes, pretty much all boxes. I remember sitting for the longest time as a little girl sifting through my Aunt Ree’s sewing box. This was eventually left to me when she passed on. I love breaking it out whenever I have to mend a little something. I’ve also managed to inherit a couple of jewelry boxes that belonged to my mother. Although I never knew her it makes me feel good to be able to use pieces that I imagine she wore as well. Like this necklace

I had to attach it to old necklaces I no longer wore to make it work. I plan to redo it eventually so it’s more cohesive but I even dig it as is.

As for the rest of the outfit, I’ve been dying to wear this dress since I got it a couple of weeks ago. It’s barely warm enough for it but I stay inside most of the day so why not? And are you guys tired of the wedges yet? ‘Cause as you can tell, I’m not!

Today I got a bag full of goodies from Victoria’s Secret. Apparently the boy is starting to get excited about leave and figured he’d prepare me for his arrival. I find this both incredibly sweet and funny. Now he’s got me all excited about leave…. even though it’s still a couple of months away.
